Revised CO2 Regulation from 2022

On 24 November 2021, the Swiss Federal Council announced a revision of the CO2 regulation. The aim is to revise the emission requirements relating, among other things, to passenger cars. From 2022, the 95-percent phasing-in quota for new passenger cars will be discontinued. This means that all vehicles brought into Switzerland by car importers and registered here for the first time must also comply with the CO2 target values that apply in the EU.

In future, penalties will be payable for vehicles exceeding these value.s. With the revision, models by niche and small manufacturers also fall under this requirement.

Prior to this change, importers were able to discount a certain proportion of vehicles from having to comply with fleet emissions (phasing in quota for 2021: 90%). This enabled emission levels  to be reduced, avoiding the payment of fines, as it was primarily vehicles with high CO2 emissions that were discounted.

The aim of this measure is to effect a decrease in CO2 emissions. However, the regulation will in all probability also lead to higher vehicle prices.
