Energy-saving tips for driving
Saving energy - that is currently the top priority in order to cope with the ongoing electricity and gas crisis. Simple changes can sometimes achieve considerable savings when driving a car. How? We'll tell you in this blog article on the 5 energy-saving tips for driving.
1. optimise your driving style
The right driving style can help to reduce fuel consumption. However, a distinction must be made between petrol or diesel vehicles and electric cars. In the case of vehicles with a combustion engine, you should shift quickly into the next higher gear. Conversely, you should shift down as late as possible. In both cases, the engine speed should be kept low.
With electric cars, acceleration should be as smooth and even as possible. Every acceleration process costs fuel or energy. It is therefore advantageous to keep the vehicle moving for as long as possible. By driving with foresight, you not only save energy, but also move through traffic in a more relaxed manner.
2. switch off the engine
Most new vehicles already have it as standard - the automatic start-stop system. It is advantageous to switch off the engine of combustion vehicles for stops over 10 seconds to save fuel. Especially at red lights, in traffic jams or in front of rail crossings, it is therefore worthwhile to use this automatic system.
3. reduce weight and air resistance
The heavier the car, the higher the consumption, regardless of the type of drive. Therefore, heavy objects (such as tools) should only be transported when they are really needed. The same applies to roof racks or bicycle trailers. These increase the air resistance of the vehicle and thus fuel consumption. Therefore, these attachments should be removed as soon as they are no longer needed.
4. Use the correct settings
Air conditioning, heated seats or a cooled glove compartment - many of these extras are already standard in most vehicles. But even these extras can save energy. For heating, it is therefore advisable to use the seat and steering wheel heating instead of the fan. This is especially true when you are alone or only two people in the car. This allows the heat to reach the body directly without heating the ambient air. In addition, the eco mode should be used if available. This saves energy right from the start.
5. Use the correct tyre pressure
One factor that is often overlooked but can contribute to energy savings is tyre pressure. If the tyre pressure is too low, the rolling resistance increases, which has a negative effect on fuel consumption. Therefore, when buying tyres, you should already choose a model with low rolling resistance.
